This season, Atlantic Canada has faced an unusual combination of wildfires and post-tropical storms. From Hurricane Erin’s powerful winds to the Kingston fire in Newfoundland and Labrador, communities have been put under intense strain. These events highlight not only the resilience of our region but also the need to stay prepared with the right insurance coverage.

The Overlap of Fire and Storm Seasons

While wildfires aren’t uncommon in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, this year’s activity has overlapped with the North Atlantic hurricane season. That overlap creates unique challenges for firefighting crews and residents alike.

  • Nova Scotia: The Long Lake wildfire in the Annapolis Valley has grown to thousands of hectares, damaging homes and forcing the evacuation of more than 300 properties. Post-tropical storm Erin worsened conditions briefly before winds shifted in a favourable direction, pushing flames away from threatened areas.

  • Newfoundland and Labrador: The Kingston fire near Conception Bay has burned more than 10,000 hectares and destroyed nearly 200 structures, including a school, a post office, and critical infrastructure. Earlier this month, about 20,000 residents around St. John’s were evacuated due to fast-moving wildfires.

The Impact on Homeowners and Businesses

These events remind us that disasters can escalate quickly, leaving families and business owners vulnerable. In some cases, it’s still unclear how many affected structures were insured. Without proper coverage, the path to recovery becomes much harder.

Insurance plays a critical role in helping communities recover. It can cover:

  • Rebuilding or repairing damaged homes and businesses

  • Temporary living expenses if you’re forced to evacuate

  • Replacing lost belongings

  • Supporting small business recovery after storm or fire losses

Preparing for What’s Ahead

With storms like Erin and Fernand tracking near Atlantic Canada, it’s clear conditions can shift with little warning. Hurricanes spin counterclockwise, which means wind intensity can rise dramatically depending on how far the storm passes offshore.

Preparation is key:
