What to Do If Someone Has Your SIN?

Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) is one of the most sensitive pieces of personal information you have. In the wrong hands, it can open the door to fraud, identity theft, and even financial loss. At Wedgwood Insurance, we know that protecting your personal information is just as important as protecting your home, car, or business. If you think someone has your SIN, don’t panic—but act fast.

Here’s what to do next.

1. Recognize the Risks

In Newfoundland and Labrador, like the rest of Canada, your SIN is often required to open bank accounts, apply for jobs, or file taxes. Unfortunately, fraudsters can also use it to:

  • Apply for credit in your name
  • Access your government benefits
  • Commit other forms of identity theft

Think of your SIN as a key—once it’s stolen, anyone can attempt to unlock your financial security.

2. Take Immediate Action

If you suspect someone has your SIN:

  • Contact Service Canada. Report the situation immediately at 1-866-274-6627. If there’s evidence of fraud, they can issue you a new SIN.
  • Report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). File a report online at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
  • Monitor Your Credit. Contact Canada’s major credit bureaus—Equifax and TransUnion—and place a fraud alert on your file. This makes it harder for anyone to open accounts in your name.
  • Notify Your Bank and Insurance Providers. Alert your financial institutions, including your insurance company. For example, we can review your policy at Wedgwood Insurance and flag your account for any unusual changes or requests.

3. Stay Alert with Identity Theft Insurance

In Newfoundland and Labrador, identity theft is an unfortunate but growing problem. That’s where identity theft protection as part of your home insurance policy can help. Many people don’t realize their existing policy may already include or offer identity theft coverage, which can help cover:

  • Costs related to restoring your identity
  • Legal fees
  • Lost wages during recovery time

We can help review your policy and recommend ways to better protect yourself.

4. Why Local Matters

Being based in Newfoundland and Labrador, we understand the unique needs of residents across St. John’s, Corner Brook, Paradise, and beyond. When your personal information is compromised, it can feel overwhelming, especially when dealing with national organizations like Service Canada.

Having a local insurance broker means you’re not handling this alone. We’re here to offer advice, review your coverage, and help connect you with the right resources if your SIN has been misused.

5. Prevention Tips for Protecting Your SIN

  • Never carry your SIN card or documentation unless absolutely necessary.
  • Only share your SIN when legally required.
  • Shred documents containing sensitive information before disposal.
  • Use strong, unique passwords for financial accounts.
  • Review insurance documents regularly for any unusual changes.

What Does This Mean for You?

If someone has your SIN, don’t brush it off. It’s serious. Quick action can protect your finances, your credit, and your identity. Reporting the theft, monitoring your accounts, and understanding your insurance options could save you from major headaches down the road.

And remember, you’re not alone. Our team is ready to help you understand your coverage and support you through any identity theft concerns.
