The latest industry reports indicate a concerning trend: Vehicle theft has increased significantly, with a 50% rise in Ontario and Quebec and a 35% increase in Atlantic Canada between 2021 and 2023.
“Car theft is on the rise due to several factors, including organized crime, key-fob spoofing, and ongoing supply chain issues,” said Guillaume Lamy, senior vice president of personal lines at Intact Financial Corporation. “This is a national crisis that requires a collective effort to solve.”
While this may be alarming for many Canadians, car theft is not a random crime, and there are simple actions you can take to decrease the risk of having your car stolen. Prevention is key.
1. Be Aware
Even if you live in an area where auto theft is uncommon, it’s important to remain vigilant. One of the easiest ways to prevent car theft is to go back to basics: park your car in a garage or well-lit area, don’t leave your car unattended while it’s running, and ensure all doors and windows are closed and locked.
Remember, vehicle theft is about where you live and where you drive. Your car could be stolen at work, during a grocery run, or at the hockey rink, so always lock your doors and park in highly visible areas.
2. Make it Known that Your Vehicle is Protected
Consider using visible and audible anti-theft measures such as steering wheel locks, sound alarms, and brake or wheel locks. Turn off your key FOB or place it inside an RFID-blocking pouch when not in use, even at home.
3. Install Tracking and Recovery Technology
Installing tracking technology can be very effective in preventing and recovering stolen vehicles. These devices can be placed throughout your vehicle and on components that are commonly sold for parts. This technology helps locate and recover your car if it’s stolen.
“Tracking technology has proven to be very effective in preventing and recovering stolen vehicles,” Lamy said. “When vehicles equipped with tracking devices are stolen, we see a recovery rate of close to 100%.”
