You’ve probably seen it in the headlines. Auto theft isn’t just a big city problem anymore—it’s creeping into Atlantic Canada, and while New Brunswick wears the unwanted crown as the region’s auto theft capital, Newfoundland and Labrador isn’t immune.
Auto Theft by the Numbers in Atlantic Canada
According to new data from the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), auto theft insurance claims across Atlantic Canada have surged 275% over the past 10 years. In 2024 alone, over $31 million in claims were paid in the Maritimes, up sharply from just $8.4 million a decade ago.
- New Brunswick is leading the charge, with over $16 million in claims and 788 reported thefts this year alone.
- Nova Scotia follows with more than $10 million in theft claims.
- Newfoundland and Labrador, while seeing smaller totals, isn’t off the hook. Theft-related insurance claims here rose 5.6% over the past decade, with over $4 million paid out in 2024.
And that’s not just numbers from St. John’s or Corner Brook. Communities across the island and in Labrador are seeing the ripple effects of a national surge in auto theft.
Why You Should Care: Local Risks, National Trends
While Newfoundland and Labrador’s numbers aren’t as shocking as New Brunswick’s, IBC warns that no province is safe from the growing wave of organized vehicle theft.
Nationally, stolen vehicles aren’t just joyrides—they’re often re-registered, re-VINed, and shipped overseas. And once thieves see easy pickings in a region, they move fast.
Amanda Dean of IBC said it bluntly: “We need to treat vehicle theft as the national crisis that it is.”
For drivers in Newfoundland and Labrador, that means being proactive. Don’t wait until your car disappears from your driveway.
What’s Being Done—and What Needs to Happen
Earlier this year, the federal government launched its National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft, with a focus on disrupting organized crime groups and making cars harder to steal.
Here’s what’s being recommended:
- Modernize vehicle safety standards so cars aren’t as easy to swipe.
- Boost provincial policing resources, similar to Ontario’s new auto theft enforcement teams.
- Improve inter-agency collaboration to tackle organized crime behind many thefts.
For Newfoundland and Labrador, this could mean increased focus from local law enforcement on vehicle crime and more public education for drivers.
How Wedgwood Insurance Can Help
At Wedgwood, we’re seeing more clients ask how to protect themselves. Here’s what we’re recommending:
- Use theft deterrents, like steering wheel locks or immobilizers, especially if you drive a high-theft model like certain SUVs or pickups.
- Park smart. If you’ve got a garage, use it. Otherwise, stick to well-lit areas or install home cameras.
- Talk to us about your coverage. Not all policies cover theft the same way. We can review your auto insurance to make sure you’re properly protected.
And as always, our brokers are ready to answer your questions. Whether you’re in Paradise, St. John’s, Corner Brook, or anywhere in between, you’re not just a policy—you’re a priority.
