Auto theft is still a major concern in 2025, and while national numbers are showing signs of improvement, drivers in Newfoundland and Labrador can’t afford to be complacent. Car theft is costly, frustrating, and certain vehicles continue to be prime targets for thieves.

This post looks at the latest stats, which vehicles are most vulnerable, and what you can do to protect yourself.

Auto Theft Across Canada

Car theft remains a nationwide issue. The Toyota Highlander continues to lead the list of most stolen vehicles because of its global demand and high resale value. SUVs dominate the top 10 list, making up seven of the most stolen models, followed by pickup trucks and a few sedans.

Drivers in provinces like Ontario are hit especially hard, often paying higher insurance premiums if their vehicle is on the high-theft list. But the risk is real across the country.

There’s some good news. Thanks to the federal National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft, Canada saw about a 19% decline in vehicle thefts in the first half of 2024 compared to 2023, and an overall 18.6% drop for the year with just over 57,000 vehicles stolen. That’s still a huge number, but the trend is finally moving in the right direction.

Newfoundland and Labrador Trends

Here at home, the story is more complex.

  • In Atlantic Canada, auto theft claim costs hit $31 million in 2024, up from just $8.4 million in 2014.

  • Newfoundland and Labrador accounted for over $4 million in theft claim costs in 2024, which was a 5.6% increase from the previous year.

  • Interestingly, the number of theft claims actually dropped 26% in Newfoundland and Labrador during the first half of 2024. The costs stayed flat, which means that while fewer vehicles were stolen, the losses per claim were higher.

  • Rural areas remain somewhat safer. StatsCan data from 2023 showed 105 incidents per 100,000 people in rural NL compared to 130 per 100,000 in urban areas.

Overall, Newfoundland and Labrador saw a 5% increase in police-reported crime in 2023, the highest rise of any province in the country.

Top Stolen Vehicles in Atlantic Canada

The latest list for Atlantic Canada includes both trucks and cars, reflecting the mix of vehicles on our roads.

  • Dodge RAM 1500 Series (2022) – 116 thefts

  • Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 Series (2021) – 91 thefts

  • Ford F-150 Series (2018) – 85 thefts

  • Honda CR-V (2022) – 54 thefts

  • Honda Civic (2015) – 77 thefts

Why Thieves Target These Vehicles

Modern vehicles with keyless fobs are particularly attractive. Criminals use radio frequency amplifiers to capture and extend the signal, unlocking and starting the car in seconds. That’s why you should avoid keeping your fob near doors or windows and use a garage when possible.

Vehicles are also stolen to strip for parts, to commit other crimes, for resale with swapped VINs, or to be shipped overseas where they can sell for double their Canadian market value.

How to Reduce your Risk

You can lower your odds of becoming a victim:

  • Install a reliable alarm or immobilizer

  • Always lock your doors, even at home

  • Park in well-lit or secure areas, ideally a garage

  • Store keyless fobs away from entry points or use a Faraday pouch

  • Check that your auto insurance policy includes theft coverage
