Written by Wedgwood Insurance Limited 's staff member - Denise Haley It’s summertime which means cruisin’ time for young drivers - around the city and on the highway! Watch out everyone - they say they know how to drive and they are on our roads!! - Young drivers become easily distracted by switching songs on their cell phone while driving – why not create a playlist in advance to eliminate adjusting music which can cause an accident? - Young drivers keep their cell phones very close by, either in the cup holder or the front passenger seat – why not keep cell phones out of sight like the back seat or in airplane mode so they will not feel they have to answer the ring or respond to the incoming text? - Young drivers admit they eat on the go as they are always on the run – why not pull over to the side of the road or parking lot to eat a lunch, which would be more safe as well as a more healthy habit? - Young drivers use cell phones as a GPS while driving which can add more confusion and distraction when responding to the road – shouldn’t guidance with a GPS be the responsibility of the passenger rather than the young driver? - Driving while tired is not a good practice whatsoever. Before sitting behind the wheel it is imperative to be well rested before taking a long trip or even a shorter drive when you are tired be prepared to take regular breaks along the way by either pulling over and resting your eyes or getting out for some fresh air to make sure you are totally alert at all times. School’s out and mom and dad’s car is not parked at work anymore for 8 hours, it is being shared by the teens who say they need to practice driving to build up their driving record. I know as I have heard this in my household this year with 2 sons who got their license. I hope my young drivers are practicing good driving skills so they can share the road with the experienced older drivers like myself?
