"It'll never happen to me." Have you ever regretted saying this phrase? Well, unfortunately for Bill, he never thought his shed would get broken into. Bill came back home one day to find his shed door wide open and looking like a tornado went through it.
In the swirl of frustration, Bill found that he had a tough time remembering exactly what was in his shed and what to report missing ... now what?
Remembering what you have and what was taken can be a battle, and Wedgwood's Account Executive and Soccer Mom Advocate, Dayna Hafey knows how to tackle it. Doing a Home Inventory can be such a pain, but Dayna has a few easy tricks that'll make it quick and easy..
Old School Meets New School
Let's be honest... creating a home inventory of your valuables is not the way you want to spend an hour or two on the weekend. Who are we kidding,.. it's almost as bad as waiting for the sunny weather in Newfoundland (one can keep dreaming right?).
But hey, there are reasons why we ask our clients to do so. The biggest reason? You will have peace of mind should anything terrible ever happen to your home or belongings, from a break & enter, fire, or hurricane.
Luckily, the days of creating an inventory checklist on excel, or with a pen & paper are long gone. Now there are faster, easier, and believe it or not... fun ways (yes, we went there) to create a record of your belongings.
Here are several "new school" ways to do a home inventory!
A picture says a thousand words
If you are at all like my daughters, you are glued to your cell phone, and cannot leave home without it. Well, time to put it to better use and take photos of your stuff! Simply walk around your home and take a few photos of each room & all important items like artwork, jewellery, and even receipts of items!
Bonus - add a description of the items when saving the photos and upload them to photo storage sites like Dropbox or Google Drive. That way you'll always have back-up inventory, no matter what happens to your phone or computer.
There is an app for that!
When in doubt... use an app! If you search "home inventory" through Google or Apple's App Store, you will be scrolling for hours until your thumb goes numb. Seriously, there are over a thousand different apps for keeping an inventory of your stuff. Lucky for you, we picked out our favorites and best apps for creating a home inventory. From Download and check them out below!
Lights, Camera and Action!
Definitely the quickest and easiest way for tracking all of your stuff in your home, is to take a video of it! Again, use your phone to video record and walk through your house while describing the contents. This way is super handy for items like kitchenware or clothing, where a photo might not be enough to explain the content.
It's all about the details...
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter which way you choose to create your home inventory, just make sure you actually complete the process and document your stuff annually! Plus, it may come in handy in other less destructive situations too, like during a move or a renovation!
Until next time,
